An unforgettable experience. Hyotei has been a restaurant for over 450 years. They specialize in fine Kaiseki cuisine, and have been awarded Three Michelin Stars every time Michelin has been to Kyoto. The menu contained mostly seafood and vegetables, and every dish was completely unique. We dined in a private tatami room, with a view of their garden. A must-visit for fine food lovers visiting Japan.

That god the Matcha was ceremonial grade.

I think your photos don’t really reflect a restaurant that charges c.$500pp? I’ve visited Japan a number of times and that kinda looks like a modest ryokan meal. I hope you enjoyed Kyoto though!

How difficult was it to secure a reservation??

Don’t get me wrong the meal looks great and all, but for Japanese food I find Michelin guides to be quite inaccurate.
It’s better to look at tablelog for restaurants in Japan.
