  1. Second time at Kato, first time at the new location at the Row DTLA. I have to admit that I wasn’t that impressed by the meal at the original location. Seeing all the continued raves on here, I decided to give Kato another shot. The tasting menu is now priced at $275 per person. We also opted for the wagyu supplement.

First bites (scallop, geoduck, tuna): great start to the meal. The scallop was our favorite.

Sea Urchin: a donut filled with Uni and topped with Jamon Iberico. Just couldn’t go wrong here. I wish there was more Uni taste in this dish.

Abalone: Abalone in egg custard, warm and comforting. A great dish for winter evening.

Caviar & Milk Bread: A favorite at Kato for a reason. This time the caviar came with Dungeness crab. Milk bread was much bigger than what I remembered. I’d come back just for this course.

Snapper: Very strong flavor. May not be the dish for everyone, but I didn’t mind.

Duck: One of the better duck dishes I’ve had. The breast was well done, crispy skin and well seasoned. The duck sausage reminded me of Vietnamese Bo Nuong La Lot.

A5 Wagyu: Unfortunately, our least favorite for the night. I applauded the originality. The dish reminded me of Taiwanese beef noodle. It just felt like this was not as dialed in as other courses, and the fatty Wagyu with fatty tendon didn’t work for me.

Freshwater Eel rice: this dish was a home run, and was my favorite for the evening.

Yogurt & Sobacha: yogurt course was a refreshing break to the meal. The last dessert course was alright.

Beverages: Cocktails here were absolutely on point. I wish they’d do walk-ins at the bar. I’d be coming back all the time just for the drinks. I also opted for the non-alcoholic pairing out of curiosity. They definitely put a lot of thoughts into it (a drink per course). It was a great chance to try: some worked while others (like the non-alc reds) didn’t for me.

Service was excellent throughout the night. Kato really stepped up big time. A lot of dishes were much more dialed in comparing to my first visit. I think they are really going for that second star. Priced at almost 300 pp, this is definitely one of the more expensive meals in the city. Is it the best? Not yet.

  2. That’s pretty much the reason why they moved. They’d have a tougher time getting stars from the old location. Going into the new one allowed them to get more space and more staff to execute

Everything looks great. Thanks for sharing
