Bas Rouge is one of the few fine dining spots that we keep visiting over and over, even if it is a bit off the beaten path in Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

During our most recent visit we learned that they added a Chef’s tasting menu to their traditional 3 or 4 courses à la carte options and we decided to give it a try.

And if their à la carte menu is great, the tasting menu was exceptional. I don’t think there was a single dish that we didn’t like and some really wowed us. The yakitori grilled octopus was the highlight of the meal and probably the best octopus dish we ever had. I would have also eaten a big bowl of the lobster risotto. And the chocolate cylinder was a delicious ending to the tasting menu.

Are the dishes particularly innovative or creative? Probably no, but the food was just damn good and it is clear that the chef has put a lot of thought into the dishes to the highlight ingredients.

Services was generally good and attentive, although a bit slow at times. I would also say that the dining room tends to get quite noisy at peak times, but I feel like the manager does a good job at keeping more “lively” guests in check.

If you don’t want to splurge for the tasting menu ($225), I think the 3/4 courses options ($125/$150) are still a very good value.
