We recently dined for lunch at Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham, UK for a birthday. We’ve been to around 20 Michelin star restaurants so had high expectations for this 2 star. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu, plus additions of the ‘duck muesli’, Chou Farci and cheese roll (which we thought was an apple dessert when ordering). We also got the classic wine pairing but opted for an upgrade for a glass each of Paulliac for the main at a cool price of £80 per glass.

The food itself was well presented and tasty, service was well orchestrated but overall it left us without any ‘wow’ factor. I enjoyed most of the meals but didn’t have a stand out favorite, while my partner loved the chocolate dessert. The final dessert course was Thai green curry flavoured which was a weird taste to end the day on. I was also disappointed that for a bill close to £1000 for lunch the restaurant didn’t accept Amex. On leaving we were presented with a gift bag with some madeleines and a herb pot from their garden. Overall a pleasant experience if you’re in the area, but it lacked the signature dish and story telling behind the ingredients, dishes and wine choices that we have come to love from restaurants of this level.

Don’t give up the day job.

  2. With three supplements on offer I don’t see how any sort of coherent storytelling works, unless the lunch menu was cheap(ish) and this was just to bump it up to the evening tasting experience.

Intrigued by that candyfloss though. Had a curry made with some at Kiin Kiin in Copenhagen, but they dissolved the floss with the broth/curry before you ate it.
