I’m back with my B-12, beans, eggs, and tofu asking for vegetarian tips! I really want to stick with vegetarianism but generally I only last a few weeks to a few months before I get a ravenous craving for meat that takes over. But I always feel great starting vegetarian diet. Is it a protein issue? Mental? Any tips?

  1. If you are craving meat, you can use beyond/morning star type products to satisfy the texture cravings. Take multivitamins to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need. Eat eggs and dairy to get B12.

Best meat subs IMO: Impossible burger meat, meatballs, and chicken nuggets, Morningstar corn dogs, Trader Joe’s Korean Beefless Bulgogi, and quite a few good options for breakfast sausage.

  3. Eat delicious things! And there are a bunch in the vegetarian world. Make food that sounds delicious to you or go to restaurants that make delicious veggie food.

I know you didn’t ask for a recipe but here is what I made tonight (please excuse the informality). It was tasty!

    Veggie Loaded Baked Potato Soup

Saute carrots, celery, onion, salt and pepper in olive oil.

    Add thyme and garlic.

Add chopped potatoes and cover with vegetable broth (better than bouillon recommended)

Simmer until potatoes and carrots are tender but still hold their shape.

Remove from heat and reserve 1/4 of vegetables.

Blend remaining soup until smooth. Return to pan. Add reserved vegetables.

Add cream, half and half, milk, or oat milk. Add a little cheese. Tatste for last minute salt and pepper and heat to serving temperature.

Serve with a bit of sour cream on top, veggie bacon bits, a sprinkle of cheese, and green onion or chives.

If you’re saying you’re not getting enough B12, dump nooch on most savory meals, that should take care of it. Also take a multivitamin that has some iron in it.

If you’re eating beans, eggs, and tofu and still craving meat, it’s probably not a protein problem but that you’re lacking some vitamins and need more fiber to fill you up. How varied are your meals? Are you eating lots of fruits and veggies?

  5. Tetrodotoxine on

I know it’s not a popular opinion but if everything that has been suggested here still leaves you unsatisfied, it’s not the end of the world to eat meat once in a while, especially if it helps you stay vegetarian 99% of the time. What would be a shame is if you gave up vegetarism entirely (meaning going back to a standard diet) because of those cravings.
We love imperfect vegetarians and vegans ! Anything to help decrease meat consumption 🙂
