Quite a spectacular experience. The restaurant has a very clean, and elegant interior with an open kitchen concept. The service was consummately professional without being snobbish or overbearing.

The food was all around great, and much more experimental flavour-wise than I was expecting given that the presentation was on the basic side. Cocktails were fantastic too. The most interesting were the “deconstructed ones” that required drinking from two glasses sequentially.

    Highlight Dishes:

    1. Bone Marrow and Shrimp will live in my head rent free. Worth the visit alone, so good! One of my favorite things I ate in the last year.

    2. Dry Aged Amberjack. Such a unique flavour profile when eaten with the watermelon.

    3. Coconut Nicautole.

    Lowlight Dishes:

    1. Sikil Pak. I didn’t mind or actively dislike this one, it just felt a little boring. The idea is to use the leaf and scoop up the filling at the bottom, but I found that there was too much leaf and too little filling so most of the flavour came from the leaf.

All in all hard to fault much here, this place is excellent and very reasonably priced. I would have liked them to introduce a specific tasting menu since it is definitely worth trying as much of the menu as possible and it can tricky to do so without sharing with atleast 2 more people. Plating was pretty basic, but I don’t think they were aiming for anything else. Finally a touch that really was appreciated: we were not sure which of the 3 desserts from the 4 on the menu we wanted to order and asked them to choose for us. They brought us all 4(one of which was complimentary)! All in all, would recommend a visit and the star is very well earned.

That all looks delicious, and I appreciate your thorough descriptions. These portions look so generous. Were these shareable plates? I live in Texas, and I’ve traveled extensively throughout Mexico; I’ve never considered what a modern Canadian interpretation of Mexican food might be, but now I want some.

  3. Awesome to see Quetzal getting some love on this sub, nicely done OP 👍

I did the tasting menu here for my birthday last month and we had a phenomenal meal. The shrimp and bone marrow was one of the highlights for us too (especially after springing for a throwback bone luge w/ some nice brandy).

I’ve eaten at many of the city’s top spots, and Quetzal is right up there with the best of them imo. I definitely walked away understanding why they nabbed that star.

  4. Favourite place in the city. Tlayuda and flat iron steak and mushrooms. Though if I’m honest I’m reluctant to class it as fine dining, it’s rustic and awesome and casual too. Sit at the bar in front of the grill if you wanna smell like camp fire and get some advice on ordering.

  5. I went there in fall 2021 (before they got a star) and I don’t think we got the tasting menu but we asked the server to pull together a menu for us and it was delicious!,
