We wanted to try an omakase during our Japan trip that wouldn’t break the bank and that was not too hard to book; we eventually opted for Hatano Yoshiki as was well-rated on Tabelog and was recommended in other subreddits.

Overall, an exceptional experience food-wise and definitely one of the best meals we had in the last several years. The “fish and rice” and the tuna progression were definitely the stars. The monkfish liver, smelt, and the final custardly tamago were the more unexpectedly delicious dishes.

I would say that service was not as polished as in other high-end places we ate at, but was polite and efficient. That said, I want to note that the chef speaks a good English and it was great being able to get the dishes descriptions (and chat about them) directly from him.

As a note, this is a lively place and we actually enjoyed this even if we were the only non-Japanese diners. That said, it may not be ideal if you are looking for a more contemplative experience.

  1. Loved this place. For people living in London, he has a casual outpost in Mayfair called Tonari. It’s in the basement of Mercato Mayfair and probably among the best value for high quality sushi in London (as long as you are willing to sacrifice setting / service)
