So yes, it’s the Rustic Canyon that recently lost its star, but nonetheless, not a terrible choice for dinner if you’re in the area

For starters, the mussel is lightly acidic and a bit herbal, goes great with bread. Their house butter is also quite nice, came out at a good temperature, easy to smear, light, creamy, easy to devour.

Sourdough pasta is good on it’s own, but I would not recommend pairing it with the mussels as it has an acidic bite at the end to cut through the fattiness from the cheese.

The roasted chicken was fine, but the carrots were a bit disappointing. They weren’t evenly cooked so some of the smaller ones were perfectly cooked through and melted when you press it to the roof of your mouth and others had a bite. Maybe that’s intended, but I would’ve appreciated some consistency.

Dessert was disappointing, I did not like the the puff pastry. The texture of the pumpkin was great, but flavor-wise, it’s a bit plain. It reminded me of a disappointing “deconstructed” apple pie I had from Spruce’s brunch menu.

The dessert menu in general was weak. Shortbread, pavlova, honey ice cream or sorbets.

I’d reckon I’d only come back for a bar seat and snack on their breads and starters and that’s only if I fail to get a table at Mélisse.

  2. So many California places have just lost their luster. In general it’s the case for most of the US. Europeans just demand better and they get it. In the US the staff demand to do less and they get it.
