I tried v-whey (vegan-friendly whey) made from fermentation, not cows. It is 130 cals / 22 grams of protein per scoop (including 5 grams of BCAAs). The vanilla sundae flavor is really good mixed with plain cashew milk. I also tried it in pancakes and that was yum too.

There are no animals used to make this, which is why it’s called “animal free”, but since the whey proteins are molecularly identical to the kind from cow milk they may cause allergic reaction for those who are allergic to whey.

California Performance is the company that sells the protein powder, but Perfect Day is the company that manufactures the v-whey in its fermentation facilities. Perfect day is the same company that sells the Brave Robot ice cream. The ice cream is really good, btw.

Pros: it’s fucking delicious

Cons: still expensive compared to pea and soy protein. Price per gram of protein is about same as what you would pay for in a No Cow bar or other protein bar

note, there are also brownie and mixed berry flavors. I got the brownie one and might make a post about it later. Haven’t opened it yet.

edit – the word “fermentation” in the title is incorrect. The flora that produces the whey is grown in fermentation tanks, so technically different that fermentation like how beer is made. Just to clarify.

I also bought and tried both the vanilla and chocolate flavors and they are both very good. One thing I didn’t see mentioned is the mixing: I had long forgotten how well whey protein mixes, there is literally no graininess with this. Now I know you’re thinking, “but my pea protein blend is also not grainy!” I thought so to, then I tried this. It is still expensive, and you make your own decisions about genetically modified foods, but this is a winner in my book!
