Nope, you have case hardening. The piece dried too quickly on the surface and didn’t allow the moisture from the middle to make its way out.

Mass loss is = to mass loss. Trim the pellicle completely, vac seal it and put it in the fridge for a month or two. It may equalize. All things equalize so if your mass loss is accurate that moisture will move around over time and equalize.
