  1. Popped into Orfali Bros Bistro in Dubai for a light lunch. The menu transcends definition, as it ranges from delicate one-bite wonders to heartier staples. It might be described as “casual fine dining” if forced to put a label on the vibe.

Owned by three Syrian brothers, this establishment has recently been accruing accolades. It now has a Michelin Bib Gourmand and is ranked on the MENA 50 Best Restaurants list.

Anyways, the ambiance was nice with an interesting two-story open kitchen. I was surprised by how small the space is though. It felt a bit crowded at times.

The food was generally fantastic. Everything is a la carte and the staff is very flexible. As a solo diner they allowed me to place half orders of two dishes so that I could sample more options. I was least impressed with the Corn Bomb since it felt a bit one dimensional in terms of flavor profile. I enjoyed everything else though with the Come with Me to Aleppo being a highlight.

The service was great. Near the end of my meal Chef Mohammad Orfali came over to chat for a while. He was interested in hearing what I thought about the food. He was also keen to share his inspirations, including showing me a cookbook with a Syrian recipe he re-interpreted to create the dessert that I had ordered.
